Obesity has grabbed us all to a level where it is now being considered as one of the modern world’s most dangerous epidemics. With an estimated value of $ 65 billion, the weight loss industry is one of the most lucrative industries. People are into all sorts of products for weight loss wherein they are spending on anything & everything dreaming about the realisation of six-pack abs claims using a single capsule for 4 months or tying a belt that burns the body while you’re seated.
CBD is being seen as the next big entrant into it with the claims that CBD can help well in weight loss. So, does it really help? Let’s find out…
CBD & ECS
We are well aware of the various benefits that CBD carries & also know at least two other CBD products apart from CBD oil. We also know that it is something which is going to benefit us too if taken properly while consulting a physician. What we don’t know is the way it functions after its entry into our body.
The mechanism of CBD’s breakdown & processing can be understood as below. This in turn is an essential part of this article since here we will understand why CBD oil is non-addictive.
There are three different types of cannabinoids namely phytocannabinoids, endocannabinoids & synthetic cannabinoids. While the first one includes those found in the cannabis & hemp plants, the second category is going to be involved in this article. The third category is of artificial cannabinoid which are synthesised in laboratory.
Human body & the body of each mammal has its system of generating cannabinoids on its own called the endocannabinoid system or ECS. The cannabinoids generated by this system are termed as endocannabinoids or eCBs. The endocannabinoids include anandamide, 2-arachidonoylglycerol, etc. The ECS runs on binding of these cannabinoids with the CB1 & CB2 receptors which are the only two cannabinoid receptors discovered till date. These receptors are located in the Central Nervous System, the Peripheral Nervous System & the immune system. The entire system regulates homeostasis in our body & is responsible for appetite, pain, memory, immune system response, etc. the binding of the receptors & eCBs causes the management of ECS to discharge its duties in full form. But sometimes our body doesn’t produces enough cannabinoids & we require them externally. Here is where CBD arrives. It doesn’t react or bind with the receptors but influences the binding with eCBs. Thus, the various functions find balance. The CB1 receptors are influenced by THC while CBD influences the CB2 receptors. When there are too many receptors in the scene, CBD brings them down while when the receptors are too less, it helps shoot up their quantity as well. It is hence an on-floor duty manager.
Hence, we now have a clear idea of the working of the working of CBD with the human body. In most methods of ingestion (barring topical application with exception mentioned), CBD reaches the bloodstream from where it begins to work by influencing the receptors.
ROLE IN APPETITE
As was mentioned in the previous section, the ECS has a role in appetite. When it comes to weight loss by CBD, we must pay heed to the words of various proponents who say that CBD can help a person lose weight by reducing & bringing down their appetite.
It is an open secret that when marijuana is consumed, they end up having a supercharged appetite. This role of marijuana can be attributed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis which causes hunger. THC activates the CB1 receptors in the body which boosts our appetite. One study conducted in 2018 stated that CB1 receptors antagonists might possibly play a hand in reducing appetite & hence control obesity. This is because CB1 receptor agonists (chemicals that react with neuro receptors to create a biological effect) block or “deactivate” these receptors.
CBD does by no means influence the CB1 receptors since that is the part of THC but, it can still turn other molecules to block it. The blocking of these receptors results in reduction in appetite & hence keep a hold on overeating.
A 2012 animal claimed that the exposure to CBD reduced appetite in rats. The study was done using CBD, CBG & CBN. It was found that CBN was the only cannabinoid which increased appetite in rats. These are only animal studies & high-end human based studies are still not here with conclusions yet. However, people are using it for weight loss.
The most surprising thing about CBD is that it plays a role of a catnip when it comes to humans. While it increases appetite in people who need to gain weight, it lessens appetite in those who need to lose it. This can be attributed to the homeostasis maintenance duty of the ECS where to balance the appetite in the body, it will take it up as well bring it down as the need be. Examples include making cancer patients feel the urge of eating after chemotherapy pain & nausea.
BOOSTING METABOLISM & BURNING THE BAD FAT!
It is not just the appetite that CBD works on to reduce weight. There are two types of fat in our bodies namely white adipose tissue & brown adipose tissue. Brown fat is the good fat & helps keep babies warm. It generally disappears as we get older. Hence, by the time we all reach adulthood, our bodies are mostly constituted of white fat (the fat under our skin & around our organs). White fat isn’t as white as it sounds & it leads to chronic problems by increasing the risk of heart diseases & liver problems. On the other side, brown fat is the good fat in our body as a specialized deposit of fat that can produce heat & increase energy levels. As supported by a claim of a 2016 study, not only does CBD help in converting white fat cells into brown fat cells, but, it also boosts the body to break down fats more efficiently. Hence researchers have high hopes on CBD evolving as a possible therapy against obesity.
Coming to metabolism, a study published in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology has opined that due to the presence of eCBs like anandamide, 2-arachidonoylglycerol, etc, our ECS is capable of stimulating specific areas of the body involved in metabolism like the skeletal muscles & the gastrointenstinal tract. The role of eCBs in the metabolism is important. It’s the stimulation of our CB receptors that results in all the benefits including an increase in metabolism & the shrinking of fat cells.
Although, overstimulation of CB1 receptors resulted in an increased risk of a metabolic syndrome characterized by high blood pressure, excess belly fat, high blood sugar levels, high triglyceride levels & high cholesterol levels, it wasn’t CBD that causes this. Instead, CBD had protective factors against such condition.
CBD – NOT A LONELY WEIGHT LOSS WARRIOR
When discussing about CBD’s impact on weight loss, we should also keep in mind that CBD isn’t a magic wand that would do it all just by a few drops. After all, it is the CBD & its impact on fat loss is not one-sided. We have to forget that this isn’t sparta where 300 men would take over the charge of things against thousands that easily. Thus, it is necessary to not just make CBD products a support system to have weight loss but get some other guys working as well. This will include introduction of physical exercise & control over food items that are rich in white fat like cheese, mayonnaise, etc. Sadly, despite so much of obesity around the corner, people aren’t waking up. They are just relying on one of the things & not other entourage undertakings that need to be fulfilled. This in turn is pushing us to a situation where we all will be obese & unhealthy someday or the other.
It is also important to have a dose of CBD properly in case of weight loss. Though the doctor will be the best man to answer this question, it is imperative to start with lower doses & gradually go on higher doses when needed. Besides, adding rigorous workout to the regime is also necessary.
Though there aren’t any concrete proofs regarding the status of CBD when it comes to weight loss, people are using it & finding relief. It isn’t a false lie being sold but a probable truth which has had good results this far. Shortly put, if the lifestyle adapts itself to a more enthusiastic & routine based life, CBD will show better impact on the body in terms of weight loss. Besides, the dosage shouldn’t be blindly taken but observed & analyzed. So, if you’re planning to buy CBD products for fat loss, make sure that it is complimented with some good physical exercise regime as well otherwise the cause is bound to fail & sink.
